Since 1970, the South Dakota Art Museum on the campus of South Dakota State University in Brookings has been a destination for visitors from around the world to experience the artistic legacy of South Dakota. Seven galleries host more than a dozen exhibitions each year, featuring a wide variety of artworks and themes. Many exhibitions highlight South Dakota connections, while others bring national and international perspectives. Exhibitions are drawn from the museum's extensive collections of Harvey Dunn and Paul Goble paintings, traditional and contemporary Native American art-including works by Oscar Howe-Marghab Linens, and fine art prints from the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s in the Cockerline Collection. The museum also collaborates with emerging and internationally recognized artists and hosts traveling exhibitions.
The museum's permanent collection includes more than 7,000 objects, including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, textiles, and ceramics. The Museum Store features jewelry, pottery, and original works by local and regional artists, along with books on South Dakota history and culture.
The South Dakota Art Museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. This accreditation recognizes the museum's commitment to the highest professional standards in education, public service, and collections care. The museum is consistently recognized for the quality of its exhibitions and educational programs and is annually named among the top museums and galleries in the United States by the American Art Awards.
