Assists with rent assistance for eviction notices, utility assistance for disconnect notices, hotel stays (does not provide a homeless shelter), gasoline or bus pass for stranded motorists or for medical reasons, minor car repairs, assistance after a disaster (i.e. house fire, flood, etc.), and prescription assistance for qualifying medications. The needs of the individual/family will be assessed, and certain documentation may be required (ex. driver's license). After business hours, The Salvation Army of Brookings County works with the Brookings County Sheriff or City Police to help individuals and families in the case of an emergency/immediate need.

Financial Assistance: Utility Assistance for past due and disconnection notices including water, lights, and heating. To be screened for utility assistance or for information about current eligibility guidelines, please call 605-342-0982. Non-Financial Assistance Programs: Food Pantry: For those needing assistance with food. Clothing Vouchers: For those needing assistance for clothing. Assistance may only be given 1 time every 6 months. Household Boxes: For those needing assistance with items used to cook and eat a meal. A lease must be shown to the caseworker in order to receive assistance. Assistance is limited according to what is available at the time. Pathway of Hope: Program for eligible families. Long term case management program to help families move beyond crisis into stability and becoming self-sufficient. Families will be required to meet with a caseworker to design a plan to meet goals, needs and objectives (ex. goal setting, assistance getting healthcare, educational opportunities, etc).

Provides emergency assistance for those in either Minnehaha/Lincoln County with rent and deposits, Utility bills: Must have a disconnect notice for water, lights, or heating; Food and non-food items, Burial: Clients should begin by choosing a funeral home and meet with them prior to applying for assistance through Minnehaha County. Also provides transportation assistance, dental care, medical care (hospitalization) and Medications. Minnehaha County residents can also receive assistance with Shelter, Gasoline or bus ticket for transients/nonresidents stranded here and needing to get home. Out of town travel assistance is not offered to MC residents. Identification and or birth certificate (if needed for the purposes of obtaining employment/housing). The majority of assistance provided is in the form of a no-interest loan for which a lien is created. The client does not receive any bill from County but is expected to repay the debt, starting in a time frame created by the caseworker. Applicants can choose to walk-in to the office or receive a phone call to complete an interview. Those applying for transportation, medications or ID/BC assistance should come into the office to apply.
