Early Head Start prenatal and children age birth to five, promotes healthy prenatal outcomes for pregnant women; helps enhance the development of very young children and promotes healthy family functioning; and provides early childhood education, health, nutrition, and mental health services. All services are provided in the home. Head Start Centers offer a comprehensive, no cost early learning and support program for children 3 - 5. Residents of Corson County are served through the Lemmon Head Start Center.

Provides assistance in the education of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) offering support and consultative services to homes, daycares, and schools. Children in South Dakota who have been professionally identified as DHH may be eligible for services. These services include: information on hearing level, assistive technology, language development, and communication opportunities; participation in the development of an individualized Family Service Plan; communication choice support of sign language skills/or training to facilitate listening and spoken language; demonstration of the use of hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM/DM systems, or other forms of listening technology; collaboration with other service providers; and social opportunities and networking for the Deaf community, as well as connecting families raising children who are DHH.

Provides services and supports to people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities including residential services, day program, vocational services, supported employment, and health care coordination.

Provides psychiatric residential treatment center licensed to serve boys and girls ages 10-17 years old, who have emotional, behavioral, and educational challenges. Offers specialized education program, extensive outdoor recreation, opportunities for community involvement, and evidence-based programming including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) groups.

Provides services to people who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf/blind, and/or have a speech disability. Community Education and Support: Provides a variety of direct service programming to deaf and hard of hearing consumers and the general public, including advocacy, peer support, mentoring, independent living, deaf mentoring, social services, recreation and social activities, senior citizen services, and other services as available. Employment Services: Assistance is provided with seeking and keeping employment, including job search and applications, preparing for interviews, initial job training, job coaching, assistance with co-workers and staff meetings. Telecommunication Equipment Distribution: Providing installation, training, and equipment including amplified telephones, captioned telephones, ring signalers, and mobile phones/tablets. American Sign Language: Community based and contractual sign language classes, interpreter mentoring, information regarding ASL, deaf culture, and deaf history available to the public and private organizations.

The Department of Human Services Guardianship Program provides guardianship and/or conservatorship services as a last resort to qualified individuals age 18 or older with an intellectual or developmental disability as defined in SDCL 27B-1-18 or qualified individuals in the Long Terms Services and Supports program. The South Dakota Department of Human Services may be appointed as a guardian, a conservator, or both, for adults with developmental disabilities under its care or to whom it is providing services or financial assistance, but only if there is no individual, nonprofit corporation, bank or trust company, or other public agency that is qualified to serve, as defined in SDCL 29A-5-110, or qualified individuals in the Long Terms Services and Supports program. The department also provides financial assistance for qualified individuals who are willing and qualified to serve as a guardian and/or conservator of up to $1,500.00 for the establishment of a guardianship or conservatorship through the Guardianship Establishment Program. Limited amount of funds for this program are available each year on a first come first served basis for qualified individuals.

Home Health can help patients make a good transition from hospital to home, or receive the help and care they need at home. Services include physical and occupational therapy, medication management, wound care, IVs and central lines, personal care, light housekeeping and meal preparation.

A state agency that works with individuals who are blind and or visually impaired in the area of employment and independent living. Services that are available if eligible Vocational counseling and evaluation, Job placement, Training in specialized skills of blindness (cane, travel, braille, daily living), Job development, On-the-job training, Job follow-up, Assistive technology services, Job retention, Funding for post-secondary training or eye surgery (If economic need is met), and Low Vision services (includes a visual examination conducted by a trained specialist in the field of low vision, assessment of visual functioning of individual needs and goals, prescriptions for specialized low vision devices, and individualized training).

Providing health care and supportive services in a patient's home. Home Health may be considered for people who are recovering from an illness, injury, or surgery, undergoing treatment, people with disabilities, and those who are chronically ill or terminally ill. Services offered are skilled nursing care, home health aides for personal care, rehabilitation therapy (physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy), social services, patient/family education, medication monitoring, and nutrition consultation.

Provide a safe and stable environment enriched with culturally appropriate and evidence based services to youth aging out of foster care, trafficked, homeless, parenting teens, and young adults ages 17-21. Also provides training and technical assistance in program development, anti-trafficking, and cultural competencies.

The South Dakota Rehabilitation Center for the Blind helps individuals who are blind or have low vision build the skills they need to live independently and confidently. Trained staff provide personalized instruction designed to support safety, self-reliance, and meaningful participation in daily life. Services include: Computer Training: Instruction in using computers with assistive technology, such as screen readers, magnification, and Braille displays, to improve digital skills and access to information. Orientation and Mobility: Training in safe and effective travel skills, including techniques for navigating environments with or without a white cane. Communication Skills: Lessons in Braille and other communication methods to support reading, writing, and information access. Home Management: Teaching essential daily living skills such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, and organizing household tasks. Manual/Creative Arts: Hands-on instruction in the safe use of hand and power tools to build practical skills and self-confidence. Low Vision Services: Access to low-vision evaluations and adaptive devices that support reading, writing, and daily tasks.

Provides support and technical assistance to high school students with disabilities and their families, local education agencies, and agencies seeking information on transition planning. Activities provided include: training to students, families, schools, and adult service agencies on transition and development of transition plans; identifying and obtaining instructional materials and assistance with implementation of self determination curriculum; Student leadership activities; Youth Leadership Forum; one-day events such as 'Catch the College Wave', and 'Let's Talk Work'; Individual support and/or assistance; and Post-secondary education linkages.

A state agency that helps individuals with disabilities to gain and maintain compatible employment in an area of their choice. Some of the available services include vocational counseling and guidance, vocational assessments, training opportunities, on-the-job training, work site accommodations, and job placement services. Services and programs include Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Independent Living services, Telecommunications Adaptive Devices (TAD), Deaf Services, and Assistive Daily Living Services (ADLS). The Mitchell office only provides Vocational Rehabilitation Services. Voc. Rehab Counselors can make referrals to the above services and programs if clients reside in the Mitchell area.

South Dakota Parent Connection is a statewide nonprofit organization that helps families, caregivers, and professionals access information, resources, and support for children and youth with disabilities, special health care needs, and developmental concerns. The organization provides free, confidential assistance to help families better understand educational, health care, and community systems. Staff members work alongside families to answer questions, provide information, and connect them with resources that can help meet their unique needs. Services include assistance with:

• Connecting with local, state, and national resources
• Understanding special education services, IEPs, and Section 504 plans
• Navigating disability-related programs and community resources
• Accessing information about health care and support services
• Preparing for school meetings and improving family-school communication
• Planning for life after high school and transition to adulthood
• Finding educational trainings, workshops, and learning opportunities

Telecommunication Adaptive Devices: Provides adapted telecommunication services, which includes an emergency phone dialer. American's with Disabilities Act: Serves as educators and consultants for contractors, businesses, organizations, and individuals regarding the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its guidelines and requirements. Assistive Daily Living Services: Provides services for people ages 18 and older, with physical disabilities affecting all four limbs, who need assistance with daily living activities. Services include program education and support and personal attendant services. Home Again South Dakota: Provides options for older adults and/or people with disabilities living in nursing homes, hospitals, or long-term care facilities to enable them to successfully return to their homes and communities. Helps individuals identify barriers to living on their own, helps them find a place to live that meets their needs, and helps them find the services and supports they need to continue living independently.

Provides community living home services for adults with disabilities and older adults who require assistance with daily living. Services include supervision, assistance with activities of daily living, meals, medication support, and coordination with healthcare providers. The program supports individuals in maintaining independence while living in a safe residential environment.

Provides education and tools to empower & encourage people in the state of South Dakota receiving Supplemental Security Income(SSI) & Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits to re-establish their self-sufficiency. Works with people who receiving SSI and SSDI benefits who are working or considering returning to work. Information is provided on available work incentives so beneficiaries can make informed choices about work and receive the support they need for a successful transition to self-sufficiency. Individuals must be between 14 years of age and full retirement age.
