Recreation Opportunities - provides a wide range of youth and adult public recreational activities. City recreation exists to provide opportunities for leisure time activities at an affordable cost, usually subsidized by public funds, which are not feasible or easily provided by the private sector. Forestry - purpose is to preserve and perpetuate one of the community's most valuable natural resource and asset - its municipal forest of trees on public property, including boulevards, parks and other city properties. The City of Brookings is responsible for the planting, care and maintenance and removal / replacement of trees on public property, including city boulevards, parks and schools. Parks Department - builds and maintains the parks in the Brookings Park system, comprising over 640 acres. The department also cooperates closely with the Brookings School District in building and maintaining joint school / park facilities. A full-time staff, assisted by seasonal employees, provides all maintenance and plays a significant role in developing and constructing new parks. Outdoor Campus Rapid City offers registration based classes, loaner equipment a walking trail, and public archery range.

The Public Works Department encompasses a handful of City services such as Parks, Streets, Solid Waste, & Recycling.

Program promotes outdoor activities and wildlife conservation by offering access to 100 acres of land, Over 2 miles of hiking trails, and pond. The Outdoor Campus offers several programs for youth, adults, and families including Women's Try-It Day, Fishing, Archery, Shooting, Hunting Skills, and South Dakota natural history.

Offers more than 200 miles of mapped and surveyed passages, guided cave tours provide opportunities for viewing this underground wilderness. *Tours are offered year-round; however, the off-season has limited tour times and facility hours. *Advanced reservations are available through recreation.gov. *For more information about guided cave tours, facility hours, surface trails and picnic areas, interested visitors should call the monument at (605) 673-8300 and speak with a park ranger.

Recreation Trail: The recreation trail has over 30-miles of uninterrupted paved trail which encircles the city. Parks: Sioux Falls is home to, over 80 parks in its more than 3,400-acre park system. Shelter Reservations: Parks and Recreation will make picnic shelter reservations for your group and post a reservation. Sign in an enclosed sign case at the shelter. Wedding Reservation: The wedding application form and complete wedding policy, which lists wedding reservation times, can be viewed, or printed on the website or call for information. Weddings can be scheduled at the following locations: McKennan Park Sunken Garden, Sherman Park Garden, Terrace Park Japanese Garden and Tuthill Garden. A portable planetarium to discover the secrets of the seasonal constellations. Starlab gives students the tools to begin their own sky exploration. Starlab encompasses astronomy and mythology and is applicable to 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 8th grade science standards and 2nd & 6th grade history standards.

A site for daily work, meditation, reading, and/or creative experiences in a natural environment, seemingly far away from city life. Designed for people of all ages to discover and nurture their own inner creativity, to explore nature, and to focus on sustainable living. Opportunities include extended stay artist residencies for creatives in all media, space for organizational group meetings, workshops, social events, seasonal arts and nature excursions, small concerts or theatrical experiences in Main Hall or outside, recital and exhibit space in A-frame, host for photography groups, literary events, etc., and also available for groups like family reunions, weddings, and country excursions.

The cave is well known for its outstanding display of boxwork, an unusual cave formation composed of thin calcite fins resembling honeycombs. Summit Activities Center features a indoor pool with water slide, 2 gymnasiums, 3 multi-purpose rooms, cardiovascular equipment, multi-station weights, free weights, small indoor track, and locker facilities. Summit Activities Center outdoor facilities include 8 lighted tennis courts, an all-weather track, 2 softball fields, a walking path, and an arboretum with many different variety of trees and shrubs. Fantle Memorial Park Pool is located at the intersection of 21st Street and Douglas. Offers an Olympic-sized pool, 2 3-meter high dive spring boards, 2 1-meter spring boards, 2 small water slides, and a Wading pool. The Parks and Recreation department offers a recreation scholarship program for youth under 17 who live in Yankton to attend one swimming lesson and one recreation program per year dependent on class openings and financial and/or personal hardship.
