Through its community-wide fundraising efforts, the Capital Area United Way helps to support 35 programs and services offered through 14 local United Way funded agencies. Supports Community Impact Programs that help improve the lives of people affected by issues such as health, income and education. Programs include Girls on the Run/Girls on Track serves girls in 3-8th grade and helps prepare them for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Imagination Library provides free books to children, ages 0-5, who reside in Hughes and Stanley counties. Mobile Dental Program helps children who don't have access to dental care. Project H.E.R.O. provides milk tickets and emergency transportation tickets to students to ensure they are healthy and able to get to school on time, and ready to learn; and the Lion's Club Vision Screening. Serves as a connecting place for volunteer opportunities. Agencies share that information through a publication in the paper called Volunteer Connections, as well as in the high school newspaper. Also, helps connects groups looking for a project with agencies needing volunteers.

This agency is an independent, community-based non-profit organization that is designed to help our community meet its social needs. Through a volunteer system, the United Way brings together business, government, voluntary organizations and committed individuals. This group assesses community needs, develops programs to help meet them, and raises funds to distribute to partner agencies to provide health and human services programs.

United Way & Volunteer Services of Greater Yankton connects with community needs through various needs including but not limited to Day of Caring, Toys for Kids, Big Friend Little Friend, Big Red Bookshelf, Imagination Library, and more.

Areas of focus are education, income, and health. Serves as the community link to agencies/organizations and individuals seeking to volunteer. Partners with many organizations to work to create lasting change in the community.

​United Way has collaborated with a panel that includes medical professionals, educators, social workers, and mental health specialists on anxiety, depression, and psychological well-being to develop activities to build resilience, by fostering safety, connections, and confidence in the lives of children and young adults. The program provides a new framework for mental health including training, guidance, and tools to address mental health needs and crisis intervention, and works with the Lost and Found organization to present and distribute information. This program is for parents, teachers, neighbors and other trusted adults who are involved with children and young people.

Provides support for programs in the health and human service fields which reflect the needs of the area. United Way is unable to provide assistance to individuals/families. United Way raises funds which go directly to 501c3 non profit organizations.

Black Hills Reads focuses on helping children reach reading proficiency by 3rd grade. The organization brings together partners across sectors to create a greater collective impact on early childhood reading proficiency and make sustainable results.
