Oversees the following divisions of the City of Yankton: Traffic Control, Streets, Engineering and the Airport. Constructs and maintains surface transportation systems that support economic viability, promotes safe travel, and add esthetically to the community. These divisions are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of streets and traffic control measures as well as maintaining the Precision Approach Path Indicator system for the Chan Gurney Airport. The Engineering Department is responsible for the design, review, and managing infrastructure projects, review and approve plats and subdivision, planning and zoning, development and revision of City maps, and flood plain boundaries.

The Public Works Department consists of several entities such as: Streets and Buildings: snow removal, street sweeping, street lighting, traffic control devices, GIS, city building and equipment maintenance Wastewater: wastewater treatment, storm water drainage, irrigation, and sewer line maintenance Sanitation: residential and commercial garbage service, restricted use rubble site, recycling program, curbside pick up service Special events: city-wide clean up, traffic control, and engineering and contract administration for capital and public improvements Rubble Site: See the Authorized Solid Waste page for information about what items can be taken to the Rubble Site. Many items can be taken to the Rubble Site free of charge (within a standard pickup truck-sized load) with a copy of a current Sturgis utility bill (see the Sanitation Policy for information); including batteries, tires (for a fee), leaves, branches, Christmas trees, etc. Please refer to the Fee Schedule for more details and pricing.
