The following items must be disposed of in the dumpsters: Bathtubs, sinks, showers, or toilets, Mattresses or box springs, TVs or electronics, and furniture.

The Public Works Department consists of several entities such as:
Streets and Buildings: snow removal, street sweeping, street lighting, traffic control devices, GIS, city building and equipment maintenance
Wastewater: wastewater treatment, storm water drainage, irrigation, and sewer line maintenance
Sanitation: residential and commercial garbage service, restricted use rubble site, recycling program, curbside pick up service
Special events: city-wide clean up, traffic control, and engineering and contract administration for capital and public improvements

Many items can be taken to the Rubble Site free of charge (within a standard pickup truck-sized load) with a copy of a current Sturgis utility bill (see the Sanitation Policy for information); including batteries, tires (for a fee), leaves, branches, Christmas trees, etc. Please refer to the Fee Schedule for more details and pricing. The City of Sturgis Rubble Site is classified as restricted use. Certain items may not be accepted at a restricted-use rubble site. Please see the Unauthorized Solid Waste page for more details.

Items that are NOT accepted: hazardous waste such as waste oil, solvents, ash, etc., pesticide containers, regulated asbestos-containing materials, lead-acid batteries, municipal solid waste and household garbage, liquid waste such as tar, contaminated water, used motor oil, etc., treated wood, cardboard, plastic, Styrofoam, packaging materials, sealants, dead animals, soil contaminated with fuels or pesticides, and electronic wastes.
The Rubble Site Attendant can exercise discretion to reject any and all materials.
