The 789 acre sanitary landfill and rubble site is located 5 miles west of Sioux Falls on 41st Street and 464th Avenue. Other services available at the landfill include:

Free compost - just bring a container and a shovel Major appliance recycling area Tree wood The Sioux Falls Landfill or a citizen's private garbage hauler can answer questions concerning either the yard waste or recycling programs. Free Landfill Pass - Sioux Falls residents receive a free paperless pass for one free trip to the City of Sioux Falls Sanitary Landfill. Pass is limited to one annual free trip to the landfill per household address. Passes are based on zip code which opens program to those living in multi-family units, such as apartment buildings. The pass will allow the addressee to dispose of one load (less than 3 cubic yards or gross vehicle weight less than 10,000 pounds) at the landfill. Residents may not pay an individual to haul your load, as the load will then be considered a contractor or commercial load. All loads must be tarped or tied down to be admitted.

City residents are allowed access to the city dump. Acceptable items are construction and demolition debris, trees and untreated wood, waste tires, white goods/metals such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers, stoves, water heaters, and other recyclable scrap metals, yard waste, and other waste such as furniture. The following items must be disposed of in the dumpsters: Bathtubs, sinks, showers, or toilets, Mattresses or box springs, TVs or electronics, and furniture.

The Public Works Department consists of several entities such as: Streets and Buildings: snow removal, street sweeping, street lighting, traffic control devices, GIS, city building and equipment maintenance Wastewater: wastewater treatment, storm water drainage, irrigation, and sewer line maintenance Sanitation: residential and commercial garbage service, restricted use rubble site, recycling program, curbside pick up service Special events: city-wide clean up, traffic control, and engineering and contract administration for capital and public improvements Rubble Site: See the Authorized Solid Waste page for information about what items can be taken to the Rubble Site. Many items can be taken to the Rubble Site free of charge (within a standard pickup truck-sized load) with a copy of a current Sturgis utility bill (see the Sanitation Policy for information); including batteries, tires (for a fee), leaves, branches, Christmas trees, etc. Please refer to the Fee Schedule for more details and pricing. Items that are NOT accepted: hazardous waste such as waste oil, solvents, ash, etc., pesticide containers, regulated asbestos-containing materials, lead-acid batteries, municipal solid waste and household garbage, liquid waste such as tar, contaminated water, used motor oil, etc., treated wood, cardboard, plastic, Styrofoam, packaging materials, sealants, dead animals, soil contaminated with fuels or pesticides, and electronic wastes.
