The Landfill Department handles the operation of landfill and collection services. The Brookings Landfill serves parts of six counties that include Brookings, Deuel, Hamlin, Kingsbury, Lake, and Moody.

All city residents are welcome to the city compost site, absolutely no household garbage is permitted, just branches and leaves (removed from bags).

The Public Works Department encompasses a handful of City services such as Parks, Streets, Solid Waste, & Recycling.

The Watertown Regional Landfill accepts and disposes of municipal solid waste. It is located three miles south and one mile east from the junction of Highways 212 and 81. The landfill is closed Sundays and holidays. Provides recycling, yard waste disposal, compost, white goods, Christmas Tree Recycling, and Household Hazardous Waste disposal. Transportation Services include Streets & Sanitation, Landfill, Snow Removal, Recycling. Public Works and Engineering Services include Potable Water, Storm Water, Sanitary Sewer Services, Building Permitting, and Planning & Zoning.

The City of Canistota offers water, wastewater, and garbage service to all residents within the city limits of Canistota. City Hall is the contact for building permits and zoning information. Pet tags are available at the finance office. All pets must be licensed. The fee to license a pet is $10.00 and proof of rabies vaccination must be provided. Pet licenses expire every January. The City Finance Officer is often a notary public.

Solid waste disposal facility that buries trash and garbage beneath layers of soil or other cover materials. Sanitary landfills, dump sites, and garbage dumps in Pukwana are regulated by both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and by South Dakota state environmental departments. Permitting rules determine the Tri-County Landfill design, operations, and allowable waste streams offered to county residents.

Christmas Trees: Christmas tree drop-off point for Yankton residents at the parking lot west of the Riverside Park baseball stadium. The Christmas tree drop-off point and the Transfer Station will start accepting trees beginning after December 26. A one-time residential, front curb, pick-up date will be determined in December. City Wide Cleanup: Spring cleaning opportunity, front curb pickup, for residents on the city garbage routes for tree branches, wood products, metal items, and concrete. Responsible for collection and disposal of garbage and yard waste. The Huron Municipal Transfer Station road is located ¼ mile east of the James River Bridge on 3rd Street. Turn south on the gravel ¼ mile and east ½ mile. Loads which contain loose material must be tarped and tied. All loads brought to the transfer station are subject to inspections to screen out prohibited materials Rubble Site (1901 9th Street S.E.) services: Residences may access the site one a month for free (with a water utility bill and ID). Items not included are; tires, Freon compressors, entire buildings, household garbage, microwaves, televisions, computer monitors, electronics, vacuum cleaners, and any other items as required by state law. Compost is available for purchase Residential garbage collection - Locate your residence on the color-coded collection map to determine the day of your garbage pickup using the color key for the map. Garbage must be bagged and placed inside the brown container so that the lid is closed. Overfilled containers WILL NOT be picked up, please call if you are in need of additional containers.
