The Disaster Distress Helpline is a hotline dedicated to providing year-round disaster crisis counseling. This crisis support service is for anyone experiencing emotional distress related to disasters such as: tornados or severe storms, hurricanes and tropical storms, floods, wildfires, earthquakes, drought, incidents of mass violence, and anniversaries of triggered events.

Assists participants in understanding thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that occurred during and after an incident. Services are a confidential opportunity to speak freely about the incident, it is not group therapy or a critique of the event. CISM can promote a more rapid recovery from the incident and facilitates normal integration back into home and work routines.

Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota networks closely with Lutheran Disaster Response and state, local and other faith-based disaster relief programs when disaster occurs in South Dakota. When a natural or economic disaster occurs, LSS is available to assist individuals, families, congregations and communities through their difficult times and work toward long-term recovery. Examples of situations where LSS has been involved include severe storm damage, tornados, flooding, forest fires and drought. LSS staff throughout the state with training and experience in Critical Incident Stress Management can mobilize quickly to offer counseling and case management when disaster strikes. A variety of services and assistance available for those impacted by disaster. LSS is a member of SD VOAD Agencies (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters).
