This program directly meets the needs of families who find themselves facing unpredicted financial hardship. These funds are accessed on a last-resort status when all other resources have been exhausted. The program currently serves clients of CASSP member organizations including Northeastern Mental Health Center, Avera St. Luke's Peds Therapies, Transition Services Liaison Project, South Dakota Department of Health, Department of Social Services Economic Assistance, Court Services, Avera Addiction Services (formerly: Worthmore), Safe Harbor, Aberdeen School District, Sanford Children's CHILD Services, SDSU Extension, Aberdeen Housing Authority, SD Parent Connection, Head Start, and Salvation Army.

In addition, some inefficient/high-cost non-operating appliances (range / refrigerator / water heater) can also be replaced in certain circumstances. Federal poverty income guidelines apply. One-time assistance allowed in a 12 month period for economic assistance. Assistance must be repaid, and failure to repay disqualifies from further assistance. - Medical Assistance is only for emergency hospitalizations for which the hospital provided the County a notice of hospitalization. Any other hospital or medical bills must be approved before the procedure is undertaken. Failure to sign up for health care insurance if that option is available and affordable will disqualify someone from assistance. No assistance with prescriptions, medical equipment or therapy(s). Typically available in August. 2024: Collaboration with United Way. August 15, 2024 at Contact Center 4:00pm - 6:00pm. Students must be enrolled in the Yankton School District. Deadline to register for a backpack is August 9, 2024. Contact Center does not help with any kind of deposit (rent, utility, etc).

The needs of the individual/family will be assessed, and certain documentation may be required (ex. driver's license). After business hours, The Salvation Army of Brookings County works with the Brookings County Sheriff or City Police to help individuals and families in the case of an emergency/immediate need.

Financial assistance is provided to households who are willing to go through financial education and learn to be accountable for their spending and saving. Services include supportive housing for adults, rapid re-housing for families, homeless prevention for families, rental assistance, utility assistance, financial advising and education, food box program, clothing closet for adult and children, representative payee services for individuals on SSI/SSDI, and street outreach.

My Neighbor serves as a bridge, offering assistance and resources through: information and referral; assessing the needs for financial assistance to include gaps and ensuring that the funding gets to those who truly have crisis needs, and using the available resources and tools to help solve situations, to prevent this same situation from re-surfacing, and to improve someone's situation for the long term and in essence creating a self-reliant member of the Brookings community. The program can cover some items that are not normally covered (i.e. daycare); it depends on the situation, but the key is based upon self sufficiency. Also, people do not qualify just because of income, low or otherwise, the eligibility comes from the specific case. This program is to be considered a LAST resort, meaning referrals will be given to clients to check out before any assistance is given.The program MAY BE ABLE TO HELP with the following: rent, rent deposit, utility bills that are current, past due, or disconnection notice for water, lights, heating, and trash, utility deposits for water, lights, and heating, daycare, small car repairs, car payment (if employed), and small health care needs. The Auditor's Office is responsible for auditing all accounts and maintaining all financial records in and for Meade County. This includes preparing the annual budget, establishing levies and apportioning of all tax collections. Monthly audits of all cash and cash items in the hands of the County Treasurer and a verification of bank account balances are performed. Annual Financial Reports are prepared indicating the receipts and expenditures, liabilities and equity, and assets of the County. The Auditor is the clerk for the Board of County Commissioners and keeps an accurate record of their official proceedings including the Board of Equalization hearings. The Auditor preserves all documents, books, and records as required by law. Notary Public services available. Some fees may apply. The Auditor performs all the duties required by law relative to all County, State and Federal elections held in the County.
