Responsible for the supervision and oversight of the following services and activities: parks, cemetery, streets, water, sewer, roundup grounds, solid waste disposal, garbage collection, custodial and building maintenance, and mosquito protection. Also oversees the operation and maintenance of Pine Slope Cemetery, St. Paul's Catholic Cemetery, and Riverside Cemetery.

Oversees the following divisions of the City of Aberdeen: Street Maintenance, Solid Waste, Traffic Control, Utilities, the Water Treatment Plant, and the Water Reclamation Facility. These divisions are responsible for the maintenance and improvement of roads and alleys, snow removal, solid waste collection, contracted recycling, traffic control measures, the maintenance of all water main, sewer main, storm sewer, and drainage ways, treatment and conveyance of drinking water, and the conveyance, treatment, and discharge of waste water.

Highway Department is responsible for county roads and bridge maintenance. Other responsibilities include road signs, snow removal, and protecting the driving public from flood waters and hazards in the road.

The County Highway Superintendents are in charge of constructing, maintaining and repairing all of South Dakota's 24,000 miles of county roads and 3,500 bridges. Highway Superintendents, in many cases, also maintain the township roads in their county. In each county, the Highway Superintendent is charged with the direction and supervision of work and keeps record of costs. The Superintendent must approve all bills associated with county road maintenance before payment. Payment for work on county road systems is made from the county road and bridge fund. In Custer County, 400 miles of county road are gravel and 8 miles are hard surface. Any county resident may request services on county roads as well as any driver who has concerns regarding the condition of the roadways.

Maintains County highways and bridges in Minnehaha County. Does not maintain gravel roads or State highways.

Highway Superintendents, in many cases, also maintain the township roads in their county. City administration approves special event permits, coordinates planning, organizing and directing the activities of city departments. Utilities - Includes water, sewer, and garbage collection Public Works - Streets & sanitation, landfill, snow removal, sanitary sewer services, building permits, planning & zoning

The Public Works Department consists of several entities such as: Streets and Buildings: snow removal, street sweeping, street lighting, traffic control devices, GIS, city building and equipment maintenance Wastewater: wastewater treatment, storm water drainage, irrigation, and sewer line maintenance Sanitation: residential and commercial garbage service, restricted use rubble site, recycling program, curbside pick up service Special events: city-wide clean up, traffic control, and engineering and contract administration for capital and public improvements Rubble Site: See the Authorized Solid Waste page for information about what items can be taken to the Rubble Site.
