Provides free rides to and from active cancer treatment appointments for cancer patients. The appointment can be anything related to cancer treatment (consult, diagnostics, chemo, radiation, etc.). This is a curb to curb service for ambulatory, mobile cancer patients (can not transport patients in wheelchairs).
This is a volunteer based program, so availability of rides depends on the volunteer schedule. All ride requests must be submitted at least 3 days before the ride is needed and must be coordinated by the American Cancer Society. The volunteer driver will contact the patient the day before the ride to confirm their information and introduce themselves. All volunteer drivers are trained and have passed background checks.
Currently in South Dakota, there are volunteer drivers in the Sioux Falls area (Lincoln and Minnehaha counties) only. Volunteers typically drive within one hour of where they are located, but patients can still call the number to schedule a ride because they will try to problem solve solutions.
