First Connection: For those who have recently diagnosed with cancer, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has provided the opportunity to speak with someone who's been through treatment and learned how to manage the same disease. The Patti Robinson Kaufmann First Connection Program is a peer-to-peer program that matches newly diagnosed patients and their families with trained volunteers who have been touched firsthand by a blood cancer and shared similar experiences. Online Chats: Live, weekly online chats provide a friendly forum to share experiences and chat with others about anything from the initial phase of diagnosis to treatment and survivorship. Each chat is moderated by an oncology social worker and is password-protected. The online chats are not a replacement for psychotherapy or support groups. Patient Financial Assistance Programs (visit website for more information): Programs may cover copays, other medical expenses, urgent need for non-medical expenses, treatment-related travel expenses, clinical trial related-travel expenses and general financial support. Goal is to assist low-income, HIV infected individuals with the cost of specific health care needs. Benefits of the program are determined by federal guidelines and a state advisory council. Due to limited funding, applicants may be placed on a waiting listing until the program can serve them. Due to restricted funding, services are limited, and the services offered east and west river are not identical. Applicants will need to set up an appointment with applicable case management organization to determine what, if any services, the applicant may be eligible for, and the case management organization can provide.

The Ryan White Part B CARE Program provides services to HIV positive individuals who reside in the State of South Dakota. Services include the Aids Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), assistance with health care costs, assistance with insurance enrollment and premium payments, and one on one case management/counseling services for individuals who are HIV positive. The HIV Prevention Program is for anyone residing in the State of South Dakota who has concerns about HIV/STD's. Services include information on health care providers and HIV testing services, one-on-one counseling for HIV/STD concerns, free condom distribution, free information regarding HIV and STD's, and information and assistance accessing PrEP.

Sanford Health also offers Financial Assistance for emergency and other medically necessary services provided and billed through centralized Patient Financial Services. Patients can call to request an application, or can visit the registration representative at the clinic or hospital and they will be able to provide an application. The patient will need to return the application completed in its entirety along with: Copy of most recent complete tax return, including all schedules. Copies of the two most recent pay stubs for each wage earner in the household. A national grant assistance program that provides financial assistance to eligible American Legion Auxiliary members who are impacted by a natural disaster or in a time of financial crisis. Disaster Assistance: Applicants must either received damage to their primary residence, been displaced/evacuated from their residence or experienced basic out-of-pocket emergency expenses. Hardship Assistance: Applicants have to have past due expenses related to their primary residence and/or basic household utilities. Grants are awarded for $3,000 per grantee and one grant (disaster or hardship) will be awarded in a 12-month period.

If an Avera patient is having problems paying their medical bill, they can contact the business office at their Avera hospital or clinic. Business office or billing staff can discuss payment options that may be available such as extended payments, government programs, or charity care/patient assistance considerations. For those who do not qualify for government programs, Avera's Charity Care and Patient Assistance Programs allows patients to get care at no obligation or discounted obligation, based on income and family size. These programs are available once all other third-party resources (including local assistance programs) are exhausted. To help determine if someone qualifies for Avera's Charity Care and Patient Assistance Programs, Avera: uses income guidelines issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, considers all financial assets and liabilities, and requires patients to provide certain personal and financial information, including W-2 forms, bank statements, tax returns and pay stubs.

Provides limited emergency financial assistance as a last resort for those considered indigent and are residents of Brookings County. The office may assist if an individual is behind on rent or utilities, or needs prescription medications that insurance doesn't cover, emergency medical expenses, county burials and funerals. They also help with vision referrals to the Lions Club. Individuals must reside in Brookings County to be eligible for services. Assistance is not free, any assistance granted will be liened by Brookings County and will be required to pay back.
