Through its community-wide fundraising efforts, the Capital Area United Way helps to support 35 programs and services offered through 16 local United Way funded agencies. Supports Community Impact Programs that help improve the lives of people affected by issues such as health, income and education. Programs include: - Girls on the Run/Girls on Track serves girls in 3-8th grade and helps prepare them for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. - Imagination Library provides free books to children, ages 0-5, who reside in Hughes and Stanley counties. - Mobile Dental Program helps children who don't have access to dental care. - Project H.E.R.O. provides milk tickets and emergency transportation tickets to students to ensure they are healthy and able to get to school on time, and ready to learn. - Lion's Club Vision Screening Serves as a connecting place for volunteer opportunities. Agencies share that information through a publication in the paper called Volunteer Connections, as well as in the high school newspaper. Also, helps connects groups looking for a project with agencies needing volunteers.

Falls Community Health is a family practice medical clinic and dental clinic with emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention. The Community Health Center was established in 1979 with its goal being to remove the barriers, primarily financial, that exist and limit the access of lower income individuals or families seeking primary health care services.  ​Services for the general public include family health, lab radiology, well-child care, immunizations, family planning (including birth control, STD screening and treatment), patient education, diabetes care, and dental care. Services for established clinic patients include outpatient mental health and substance abuse counseling, psychiatry services, transportation assistance (transporter of last resort), and pharmacy assistance to clients of the Falls Community Health Care Clinic.

Works with 7 pharmacies in Belle Fourche, Deadwood, Lead, Spearfish and Sturgis.

It is a service that is generally offered once per year at First Lutheran Church. The Dakota Smiles program is designed to assist children (ages 0-21) who do not have access to care and who do not have a dental home (children who have not seen a dentist for two years or live more than 85 miles from a dentist). No child will be turned away for inability to pay for services. Services provided include: diagnostic and preventive procedures, restorative procedures and tooth extractions. The first 2 days are reserved for check-ups. The second half of the week is reserved for any follow-up appointments.

These are children who, for a variety of reasons, have been unable to access adequate dental care. United Way & Volunteer Services partners with Delta Dental of SD to bring the Delta Dental Mobile Program to Yankton each year in March to offers no cost dental care to children ages 0-21. **Pre-registration is required to participate. Registration deadlines vary.
